This event was designed with the intention of becoming one of New Zealand’s fastest marathon courses. It is a net downhill course all on road starting at the high point of the Egmont National Park gates at approx 460m above sea level and finishing at the Marine Park in Waitara (sea level).
Who best to create a course that appeals to runners, but runners themselves, so in 1980 the inaugural “Mountain to Surf” Marathon event was held. The course was won in a time of 2:16:29
Male Winner: Gerald Dravitzki 2:16:29
Female Winner: Alison Kroon 3:09:49
Credit for the creation of this local running event has to go to one of our Harrier Running Clubs – Energy City, who continue to support this event.
The event is now hosted by TET Athletics Taranaki to continue to provide regional support and development for our local athletes over a variety of disciplines.
